Set high on a hill Hampstead was, for hundreds of years, a village wealthy Londoners retreated to for the good of their health. Today Hampstead remains one of London's most affluent and attractive areas and our visit combines a coach and walking tour with a visit to nearby Kenwood House. Our day begins at 10.15a.m. in Highgate where you meet our guide. After coffee we set off on an interesting coach tour of the area. In Hampstead Garden Suburb we learn of a philanthropist with a utopian vision and in Bishops Avenue come face to face with the moneyed classes. We leave the

coach at Whitestone Pond, with its spectacular views, for a gentle walk down the attractive narrow lanes of Old Hampstead. For lunch we drive to Kenwood and in the afternoon we explore the house and its contents with our guide. Robert Adam, the Laurence Llewelyn-Bowen of his day, remodelled the interior in the 18th century with a wonderful lightness of touch. Today it is filled with priceless paintings bequeathed to the nation by the Guinness family. There will be time for tea before you wave goodbye to our guide at 4.30p.m.
