When the Romans chose a site for one of their towns they usually knew what they were up to. If they could return today and see what has become of their Verulamium they would not be disappointed. Modern-day St Albans wears its history well and because there is so much to see we have included a full-day visit here.
You meet our guide at 10.30a.m. for coffee and then a guided walk will take you back to the town’s medieval past. Sarah, Duchess of Marlborough, Sir Francis Bacon and Nicholas Breakspear, who became the only English Pope, all lived here. In the middle of the 3rd century St Alban was martyred here and

a great Abbey grew up on the site of his martyrdom.
We break for lunch in the town centre. You may prefer to bring a packed lunch which will give you time to visit the Abbey.
The afternoon is dedicated to the Romans. A short drive takes us down to their theatre. You will hear about gladiatorial contests, plays and audience participation. To complete our Roman afternoon there is a visit of the award winning Verulamium Museum with its recreations of Roman rooms and some of the best Roman mosaics and wall plasters outside the Mediterranean.
Finally, it’s time for tea and you'll be leaving by 4.45p.m.
