When people think of Essex they tend to assume that the whole county is flat and dull. Our tour will show you how wrong this is as we make our way through attractive rolling countryside, ancient towns and villages and take a gentle guided walk of charming Saffron Walden. Our guide will be waiting for you at 10.30a.m. in Stansted Mountfitchet where you have coffee. During our morning drive we stop to appreciate the charm of Finchingfield, the epitome of an English village. Our lunch stop is the lovely town of Great Dunmow where we learn of a curious tradition. explore more of the beautiful countryside. We see Thaxted with its famous Guildhall and magnificent church. We hear of a famous highwayman who once plied a more honest trade nearby and on a more gentle note the composer Gustav Holst lived and worked here. Our final destination is the lovely medieval town of Saffron Walden. Once famous for its crocuses, the streets are lined with half-timbered houses decorated with pargetting. It is the perfect place to discover on foot with our guide. There is, of course, time for tea and you'll be heading home by 4.45p.m. |
