Rochester is a beautiful, historic town. The Isle of Sheppey is less well known as a visitor destination but has an equally interesting past. Our tour includes visits to both. We start in Rochester where you meet our guide at 10.30a.m. for coffee. The centre of Rochester is compact and ideal for our walking tour. Our stroll takes us along the attractive high street, past the Norman castle and cathedral, and down streets with Tudor and Georgian buildings. You will hear of a saintly baker; a siege where pigs won the day; a queen who was never quite satisfied and, of course, Charles Dickens. After lunch in Rochester we drive to the Isle of Sheppey. Our destination is

a Norman church in the middle of nowhere. Overlooking the Swale, it has a timeless and peaceful atmosphere. From here we drive to Minster to visit the Abbey. One of the oldest churches in England, it was founded in the 7th century by the interestingly named Sexburgha. There are some wonderful medieval tombs, one of which tells the tale of a knight whose horse killed him after he had killed it! After your tour of the church it’s time for a delicious cream tea, which is included in the price, and you’ll be making your way home by 4.45p.m.
